A remote data backup would have covered this eventuality. Nobody should have to risk his life for computer files, hence the necessity of online backups.
Magnetic tapes problem
Like any magnetic medium, tapes are fragile and tend to corrupt over time. Data readers are costly and require regular maintenance..

The process of backuping on magnetic tape implies that someone must manually insert, switch and rotate the tapes. They must then be transported offsite for the procedure to be really effective. If the reader breaks a replacement must then be found... if possible!
